　　The international joint venture and learning literature has suggested that firms have the potential to learn valuable new capabilities from their international joint venture partners. There is, however, a paucity of empirical evidence showing that firms participating in such joint ventures are actually able to acquire and sustain critical capabilities through their partnership. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of joint ventures on local firms’ learning using a database of Chinese firms that participated and didn’t participate in international joint ventures. Focusing on innovation capabilities, we find that Chinese firms that had participated in a joint venture exhibited superior innovation capability after exiting the joint venture compared to those that had never participated in a joint venture. Furthermore, involvement in joint ventures that had lower foreign equity and superior relative performance, and which operated in more innovative and competitive industries, enhanced these firms’ subsequent innovative capabilities. Nonetheless, over a period of four or more years after exiting the IJV, innovative capability of local firms declined. This research suggests that the ability to acquire and sustain complex capabilities through international joint ventures may be more difficult for local firms than suggested in prior research.

　　李璨，北京大学光华管理学院组织与战略管理系博士候选人，美国俄亥俄州立大学联合培养博士，研究方向为新兴市场的企业创新。她的研究主要关注影响企业创新的组织特征、CEO认知与领导风格;联盟参与和联盟组合对于创新绩效的长期影响;创新的制度因素，尤其是区域政治领导人变更如何塑造区域企业间的学习动态。博士期间会议论文6篇，学术发表3篇，工作论文在国际商务领域重要期刊《Management International Review》、《International Business Review》退修和审稿中。
