讲座提要:In this paper, I analyze the effect of import competition from China on gender inequality in the US manufacturing sector. I find that gender inequality in employment increases under the impact of China's rise and is felt most strongly by workers over 40 without a college education. A $1000 increase in import exposure per worker leads to a 0.424 percentage point relative decline in manufacturing employment for low-skilled older women compared to low-skilled older men.
Differing from previous studies, I find that the main cause of the rising gender inequality in the manufacturing sector is related to the gender difference in work experience rather than discrimination or industry composition. By developing a gender-age specific model, I find that worker's industry composition cannot fully explain the impact of Chinese import competition on gender inequality because the manufacturing employment gap still exists among low-skilled older workers after controlling for the gender difference in industry composition. In addition, the gender inequality is mainly from areas with large gender gaps in job tenure, suggesting that work experience might explain the gender inequality among older workers.
