“家长主义”教育较为普遍,尤其在东亚国家。通过影响或限制学生的选择,“家长主义”教育可能弱化学生的学习能力和内在动机。本文利用中国教育追踪调查数据来研究“家长主义”教育如何影响学生的学习动机和学业表现。本文具体研究了晚自习的效果,晚自习可以把一天的学习时间延长到共14个小时,且全程在学校监管之下。我们利用日落时间的差异作为因果识别策略,发现晚自习显著降低了学生的考试成绩和自我评估的分数,尤其是语文和英文科目。这种负面效果在认为学校监管决定学生成绩的班主任所在班级更为明显。晚自习也弱化了学生的学习和校园生活的内在动机。本文也讨论了其他可能的机制以及对目前教育改革争议的含义。

Paternalistic education is ubiquitous, particularly in East Asian countries. However, by influencing or constraining the choices of students, paternalistic education may disempower students and ‘crowd out’ their intrinsic motivation (Bénabou and Tirole, 2003). This paper utilizes data from the China Education Panel Survey to investigate how paternalistic education in schools shapes students’ academic motivations and performances. Specifically, it examines the effect of evening school sessions, which typically extend the school day to 14 hours and encompass almost all study time under the school's control. By leveraging variations in sunset times, we establish causal inferences and find that evening school sessions significantly decrease students’ test scores and self-assessed scores, particularly in Chinese and English subjects. The negative effects are particularly strong for the sample students whose class advisors consider school intervention critical for students' academic success. Furthermore, we find that evening school sessions undermine students' intrinsic motivation for studying and school life. We also discuss alternative mechanisms and offer implications for the ongoing debates regarding education reform.

洪福海,获香港科技大学经济学博士学位,现为香港岭南大学经济系副教授,主要研究领域为环境经济学、公共经济学、行为与实验经济学。论文发表在American Journal of Agricultural Economics、 Games and Economic Behavior、International Economic Review、Journal of Public Economics、Experimental Economics、Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists、Management Science等国际期刊上。
